Working from home is one of those things I’m sure every one of us has dreamed about doing at some time during our working life.

For me, it’s now a reality!  As a Virtual Assistant, I have to be 100% certain that working from home is for me.

Initially I was concerned about the whole thing.  How do I stay focused?  How do I stop myself from spending the day in the garden when it’s gloriously sunny?

However, it’s surprisingly easy to stay focused.  I have to.  This is my business.  My whole aim is to provide first class virtual admin support – I can’t do that whilst sunbathing, can I?! 😉

One of the most common problems amongst home workers is a reduction in productivity.  I find if I make a to-do list the evening before, I can make a start straightaway the following day without having to spend time thinking what I need to do.

I’ve also created a workspace specifically designated to OutofhoursAdmin.  I am only here when I’m carrying out virtual pa / admin duties.  I always leave the area for lunch and breaks, that way I remain focused whilst at my desk.

Another way to help productivity is to dress as though you’re still going out to work.  This sets the mind into work mode.  I wouldn’t dream of answering phone calls in my pyjamas!  Just because my service is virtual doesn’t mean I can walk around in jogging pants all day!

I think the most important factor I had to consider was the feeling of isolation.  This is something I had to wrestle with once I decided to become a Virtual Assistant.  How would I cope being at home all day every day with only myself for company?  In actual fact there are plenty of forums and networking sites to join, all with like-minded VA’s online to provide support, advice and, most importantly, interaction.

And, anyway, with more and more businesses discovering the benefits of virtual admin support, I’m going to be too busy to feel isolated! 🙂
